Akshay Kumar's 'Joker' - Exclusive Movie Review

      Joker – External Movie Review

Theater - Abu Dhabi National Cinemas, UAE

                                                                  30/08/2012 - 9.30 pm

Occupancy - 80% (50% are kids with family, thanks to U/G certification)

Akshay Kumar is going through one of the best phases of his career now. Thanks to his two 100crore blockbusters in a row in the form of Housefull2 & Rowdy Rathore. Joker is his third film of 2012 to hit the screens. Joker is reportedly Akshay Kumar's 100th film. Joker released today in UAE. Joker is a fantasy adventure film directed by Shirish Kunder, and also his second directorial venture after Jaan-E-Mann also starred Akshay Kumar with Salman Khan. Shirish made a grand entry in Bollywood as a director by getting excellent reviews from the critics for the film. But since it’s opened on Diwali 2006 with stiff competition from Shahrukh Khan’s Don,  Jaan-e-mann didn’t click as it deserved to be. After 4 years he again came back with Akshay Kumar in the form of script writer for his wife Farah Khan’s third directorial venture, Tees Maar Khan
. Luckily for them & unfortunately for the audience the film looted maximum collection within 1st week only thanks to the Sheila Ki Jawaani mania & the hype around TMK for being a Christmas release. Frankly speaking TMK was an undeserved success for the Akshay-Farah-Kunder team. Their intention was clear.  Just make audience fool and earn maximum money within 1st week. Since TMK was co-produced by Akshay & Farah, it gained profits… But at the same time TMK remains a favorite punching bag to this day for Akshay-Farah-Kunder. And now with Joker, the same team coming again, this time directed by Shirish & co-produced by Akshay & Farah. Sonakshi Sinha is the heroine of Joker. This will be her second film paired opposite Akshay after Rowdy Rathore.

In 1947 when the maps of India and Pakistan were being drawn, an oversight ensured that the village of Paglapur didn't find a place in either country. The village had the distinction of housing the largest mental asylum in the region that ensued during partition, the asylum inmates broke loose, drove away the villagers and established their own republic in Paglapur. And that's how it stayed for the next 60 years! While the world outside changed, Paglapur remained isolated, with no electricity, television or sanity. Now, decades after the world forgot this village, a NASA scientist of Indian origin, Agastya played by Akshay Kumar and his beautiful wife Diva played by Sonakshi Sinha find themselves on the road to Paglapur. Agastya is working on a top secret project for creating a device to communicate with aliens. So why is he in a village whose colorful inhabitants include a man who speaks in Gibberish (Akshay’s brother played by Shreyas Talpade), another who thinks he is a lamp post and everyone else who think Mahatma Gandhi is still around, fighting for independence? And more importantly, what are they going to do that will soon turn the universe's spotlight on this forgotten village?

Let me go straight to the positives of the film first.
Joker is well executed in the first half. Infact everything about the first half is simply superb. Akshay Kumar who entertained us in Housefull2 & Rowdy Rathore got a serious role here. And no surprise he is good in this film too. Sonakshi Sinha is strictly OK. Shreyas Talpade is a big surprise. Infact he entertained us more in this film. Asrani is funny. And his english subtitles for his each hindi lines are really witty. All other actors are good in their own roles. The much talked Alien Golkot is very entertaining and it’s a visual treat for all the kids. Music composed by famous Tamil Composer GV Prakash (Nephew of AR Rahman) is excellent and all the 4 songs Kaafirana, Jugnu, Singh Raja & Yeh Joker are really good. Shirish Kunder directed the first half brilliantly. No two opinions on that. Frankly speaking really impressed by his film making STRICTLY on the first half. Whatever others say, he got an extra good oblongata when attempting new themes in Bollywood. His background score is epic stuff. Hats Off to him for letting us see this Place Paglapur. Excellent location & production value is just superb. Infact everything till first half was just wow and I was hoping for the same treatment in the second half.

UNFORTUNATELY……. A Big NO, But Why ???...

Here comes the negatives of the film. Well it will be better if I say Second Half itself is a negative for the film. I have no idea what Mr.Kunder was thinking while writing the script for second half? The lesser I say, the better it would be. Some scenes are absolute crap.  At one point I asked myself, am I watching the second half of Joker? Infact I had a feeling of watching Tees Maar Khan 2 !!! Agreed Joker is touted as a film for kids. But atleast some Logic ??? The only good thing about second half is that 5 min scene by Alien Golkot. It was really entertaining. But that’s about it. So many questions remained unknown… What happened to Akshay Kumar’s job which he need to finish within the target of 1 month??? No clue… Minisha Lamba is totally wasted. Sonakshi got only 3 dialogues in the second half. And Sonakshi in a village dress? Ufff No Way… Last but not least, I was wondering why Askhay Kumar was keeping distance from the promotion of Joker, that too being his 100th film ??? if rumours are to be believed true, then we can’t blame Akshay. Sincerely feel bad for Akshay to get Joker as his 100th film.

On the Whole Joker is just about an average film which has excellent first half & music as its plusses and the whole second half as a letdown. Take your kids, they will enjoy for sure. Akshay Kumar films will always recieve bumper opening at the box office. But in the case of Joker,  considering its lack of promotion & the superstar’s absence on promotions, chances are very less to open 10cr+ on opening day. If weekend cross 30+, then its ONLY because of the star power of AkshayKumar. Good news for Joker is that it’s a 40 crore film co-produced by Akshay & Farah and already recovered 32 crore before the release. So whatever the film gonna gain will be a profit for the makers & distributors.

Verdict – Strictly Average

Its an Udtha Firtha Half cooked 'Omelet' which fails to hit the 'Bulls Eye'

Rating – 2and Half stars ( 2 for the film and half for the production value)

The Expendables 2 - Exclusive Movie Review From Kerala

Directed by     Simon West
Produced by   Avi Lerner, Danny Lerner, Kevin King Templeton, Les Weldon
Screenplay by     Richard Wenk, Sylvester Stallone
Story by     Ken Kaufman, David Agosto, Richard Wenk
Based on     Characters by David Callaham

Starring

    Sylvester Stallone
    Jason Statham
    Jet Li
    Dolph Lundgren
    Chuck Norris
    Terry Crews
    Randy Couture
    Liam Hemsworth
    Jean-Claude Van Damme
    Bruce Willis
    Arnold Schwarzenegger

Release date  August 17, 2012 [USA]
                     August 24, 2012 [India]

Plot

The Expendables, leader Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone), blades specialist Lee Christmas (Jason Statham), martial artist Yin Yang (Jet Li), weapons specialist Hale Caesar (Terry Crews), demolitions expert Toll Road (Randy Couture), the unstable Gunner Jensen (Dolph Lundgren), and sniper Billy the Kid (Liam Hemsworth), the group's youngest and newest member, are reunited when Mr. Church (Bruce Willis) enlists them to take on a seemingly simple job. When things go wrong,  when one of their men is murdered on the job, the expendables is all out for revenge. But the enemy that awaited them was no simple deal....

The first part was kinda dumb ass for me, just loads of no-brainier action. Well this time also its the same its presented in a much much better way. The story is same as the first one you have to kill the bad guy and save the world (or whatever).  when emotions don't work, they don't connect with, no matter how brilliant the action sequences are they don't work beyond a point . But this time its told with emotions and told brilliantly, Simon west who took over from Stallone has done a great job. those who didn't like the first part or who haven't seen it yet can watch this and have a blast.

Those who look for logic, story and stuff like better stay at home. Its an out an out action fiesta just like a Mass Masala south Indian movie. "NO LOGIC BUT SHIT LOAD OF MAGIC !!"

The major plus point of the film is the bullet pace screen play which this time has told with conviction and emotion. Also the mind blowing action sequences which has been choreographed beautifully. Just like in the first part they don't time enough to think about logic or loop holes in it, it keeps you hooked through out the run time.

Apart from the action, one thing you expect from the film is the quirky one-lines which are in double dose this time, infact each and every word Statham mouths is a punch line. They are in plenty like the ever green "I am Back" "You have been back, now its my turn" "Your A** will be 'TERMINATED'" etc etc

If none of the above excites you watch it atleast for the stellar star cast. You have got all the world's best bad ass action heroes in a single movie. Jason Statham is as always full on rocking. Stallone and rest of the expendables were good. Jet Li gets only a cameo length role this time. Eventhough for a few scenes its a treat to watch Bruce Willi's & Arnold on screen, especially in the climax sequence. Also got to see Van Damme after a while in a villain role., who gets side lined a bit because its all about heroes.

Remember its an all boys world out there, so all ladies if u don't like BIG GUNS & boys Playing with them don't even bother watching it.

So want to have a blast of a weekend, sit back, dont care about anything, relax kinda a weekend GRAB A TICKET damns soon !!!!

Verdict:  Quit Reading & GO Watch it !!!

Rating 3.5/5

Box Office: Already a hit in US , should be the same in India too

When SRK film needed Salman Khan's Help

Two of the most awaited film of the year are from Yashraj Films and starred two of the countries biggest  super stars - Ek Tha Tiger [ETT] & the yet untitled 'Yash Chopra Romance [YCR]'. While Ek Tha Tiger released worldwide in a record breaking 3800+ screens on August 15th and broke all the existing opening records as expected.

The SRK film was planned as a Diwali 2012 release long before the shooting began as Diwali is synonymous with SRK as EID is with Salman Khan. Just like a solo release for ETT Yashraj expected a solo release for YCR as well ans was casual as far as the promotions were concerned. But it was then Ajay Devgan dropped a bomb shell along with the first look posters of Son of Sardar that they too are coming this Diwali. But no body took it seriously then until they released the full theatrical trailer 4 months in advance. The problems multiplied as the trailer was liked by one and all & is in the lines of typical Bollywood action comedy mass masala which are doing wonders now at the Box Office.

This made Yashraj to consider the threat as serious and there was panick among every one regarding the clash of 2 big films, both distributed by industry giants Eros & Yashraj. It was sure that theater owners would give equal screen space to both the films after this, so after sessions of brain storming they decided to play the trump card- 'Ek tha tiger'. All screens who want to play 'Ek tha tiger' should also ensure same amount of screen space for YCR as well. But still the theater owners weren't sure about the project as nobody knew nothing about the film apart from regular netizens. Thats when YRF suddenly decided to come up with a teaser to be attached to 'Ek Tha Tiger' Bollywood's biggest release ever to give it the widest reach even at places where there are no internet or computers. Remember Salman refused to add Ra.one trailer with ready and Don2 teaser with Bodyguard last year but here YRF had a bit of control in matters, so a roughly edited teaser was attached to the film and released online with just 30 seconds of films footage in the 1:30 min trailer.

Salman Has always been there to help his friends, did cameo roles in KKHH, OSO, Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam etc, allowed Ra.one promotion in Bigg Boss 5 & now helps to indirectly market & release YCR [remeber in a Salman film the last word is always his] , but SRK hasnever ever returned the favour, atleast nothing visible to public eye. so i think its high time SRK returns the favour to some of his well wishers.

NOW Regarding YCR - SOS Situation

As i said the main intention was to inform everyone that the SRK film is indeed coming this Diwali November 13 rather than releasing a teaser. So if SRK fil is confirmed for Diwali & with the un-written agreement in place theaters will have to give more screen space to YCR, which puts Eros & Son of Sardar in trouble. As per different trade reports SOS could be getting only 30% of screens as the remaining 70% will be occupied by YCR which could go up once the trailer & osngs are out, after all it has big names like SRK, Yash Chopra, AR Rahman, Karina Kaif going for it.

In the past whenever a big film collided with a SRK starrer in Diwali it bit the dust -eg: Don/Jaaneman OSO/Saawariya. so it will be an interesting scenario as what will happen Nov 13 2012 as EROS confirmed [as if now] that they have no intention to back down]

Mr. Marumakan - My Movie Review

Directed by     Sandhya Mohan

Produced by     Maha Subair, Nelson Eapen

Written by     Udayakrishna, Siby K. Thomas

Starring

 Dileep
Sanusha
Bhagyaraj
Khushboo
Sheela
Biju Menon
Nedumudi Venu

Music by     Suresh Peters, Rajamani

Cinematography     P. Sukumar

Studio     Varnachitra Big Screen

Release date:     18 August 2012

Language     Malayalam

Story

Mr.Marumakan deals with Ashok Chakravarthy (Dileep) & his attempts to save his family properties from bank seizing them by marrying millioanire childhood friend Raja Lakshmi (Sanusha) and in the process teaching the lesson of love and life to Lakshmi's arrogant rich mother Raja Mallika (Khushbu) & grand mother Raja Kokila (Sheela) with the help of Balasubrahmanyam (Bhagyaraj) Mallika's husband.

The film is a non-stop rollicking no brainer entertainer with enough mass elements to make everybody happy, clap & whistle.

The film is once again an out an out Dileep-tainer. He is once again in top form after blockbuster Mayamohini. But its better than Mayamohini & Karyasthan , both again written by Udayakrishna, Siby K. Thomas duo. There is a deliberate attempt to project him as a superstar but without deviating from the comedy angle which made him click big time, especially with ladies & kids, and it worked to a T. Loved the way the flash back scenes were shown with clips from old films. Also loved the way they showed the titles with photographs everyone along with the names.

Khusbhu as the rich, arrogant mother in law was superb. She simply rocked in the role with grey shades and  stood along with Dileep in terms of screen presence. It was a treat to watch a near perfect Lip Sync eventhough Bagyalakshmi's sound felt a bit odd for her.

Bhagyaraj also did a very good job, a lengthy role after a while i think. The supporting cast of Biju Menon, Suraj, Baburaj, etc were also good, eventhough Sheila was bit over the top.

The BG was massy enough and suited the genre of the film pretty much eventhough a bit loud at times.
The Songs were average except the title track.

Like all Dileep films this one is also not free from double meaning jokes, eventhough few in number, but we saw even ladies ROFLing in Mayamohini, so not a big issue now a days i think.

The film at 2 hours 57 minutes drags at many places in the second half, need to trim by a good 15-20 minutes. There was no need of that rain song.

The story is a mix of many Tamil movies, which even featured Khusbhu & her husband Sundar.C !!

So All in all a perfect festive entertainer, Go and have a BALL this festive season

Verdict:

Festive Entertainer

Rating:

3.5/5

Box Office

Looking at the response after the show & the queue in front of theaters , it should be a Super Hit

Thappana - My Exclusive Movie Review

Directed by     Johny Antony

Produced by     Milan Jaleel

Written by     M. Sindhuraj

Starring

Mammootty
Charmy Kaur
Murali Gopy

Music by     Vidyasagar

Editing by     Ranjan Abraham

Distributed by     Galaxy Films
Release date    August 19, 2012

Language     Malayalam

Plot

The story is about two convicts, Samson [Mammootty] and Mallika [Charmee Kaur],  are released from jail on the same day & together. Due to some circumstances Samson had to accompany Mallika to her home town 'Karippa'. First half is about their journey &  the second half deals with the problems that awaits them in Karippa.
Did the film which was believed to be Megastar's come back into winning ways before release live upto the huge expectations? Lets see...

First of all its an out an out Mammooty show, he simply rocked as Samson who has difficulty in pronouncing the letter 'à´¸ (SA)' properly. He always had great command over such nuances of dialect and all such films were huge hits. Most of his dialogues were clap-worthy.

Charmee as Mallika, may be her first ever non-glamorous role with minimal or zero make up, did a commendable job. Her Lip sync & emotions were almost perfect.

The rest of the cast especially Murali Gopi, Kalabhavan Shajon, Mala Aravindan etc also did good job.

The camera work & editing was good, action choreography was intelligent, done very well understanding Mammootty's limitations. The song 'aaro' is already a chart buster.

The story [whatever i found in the film] is pretty much similar to that of Mammotty's blockbuster 'Mayaavi'. The Script which was reasonably entertaing in first half some how goes weary in the second half, felt as if the writer didnt know how to reach the climax, which was predictable miles away. So he introduced many characters and sub plots which think affected the movie a great deal.

While the first half was good and reasonably entertaining, the second half felt pretty average where Samson the crux of the movie takes a back seat.

For a regular movie goer there may not be nothing much apart from Mammootty's performance. But it is the stars best outing since 'Best Actor (2010)' there is no 2 ways about it.

For a Mammootty fan it will be a 3/5 film & for a neutral person it will be a 2.5/5 film

So will it be the long awaited come-back of 'Ikka' lets hope so

Verdict:
Above Average

Rating
I am Going with a generous 3/5 for one & one reason only 'Ikka is backkk'

Box Office: Should be Above Average atleast, but depends upon other Eid/Onam releases

Allu Arjun's Gajapokkiri [Julai] - Exclusive Movie Review

Directed by     Trivikram Srinivas

Produced by     S. Radha Krishna
D.V.V. Danayya
Redakh Arts [Malayalam]

Story,  Screenplay    Trivikram Srinivas

Starring

Allu Arjun
Ileana D'Cruz
Rajendra Prasad
Sonu Sood

Music by     Devi Sri Prasad
Cinematography     Chota K. Naidu, Shyam K. Naidu
Editing by     Prawin Pudi
Studio     Haarika & Hassine Creations

Distributed by    Redakh ArtsFicus Inc.

Release date         August 17, 2012

Running time     160 minutes
Country     India
Language     Malayalam [Dub]

Its after 1 year 2 months and 7 days [as the posters say] a Mallu arjun film is releasing in Kerala. Also Positive reports which the original Telugu version 'Julai' got raised the expectations. Allu Arjun has got a huge fan following among youth of Kerala, which is evident from the way each of his films open in Kerala. Huge Excitement was there among the fans as the last 3 ventures of the star were flops here.

Plot

The story is a revenge saga between Bittu (Sonu Sood) & Ravindra Narayan (Allu Arjun), whose paths cross during a bank robbery which Bittu is doing for  Political Leader Varada Raj (Kota Srinivasa Rao). Both men are looking for revenge and the rest of the story is the cat & mouse game between Bittu & Ravi. Illeana plays his love interest, Rajendra Prasad, Brahmanandam etc forms the rest of the cast.

First of all, the film is very much a watchable entertainer, especially when compared to last few films of Allu (Vedam was ruined by the Kerala Producer/Distributor.)

The character of Ravi, a happy go lucky guy, was tailor made for Allu Arjun, kind of role that made him famous here and he did full justice to the rule. Its an out an out Allu Arjun film. Rajendra Prasad was terrific as ACP Sitaram. Brahmanandam, R.Prasad, Allu Combo literally brought the entire house down in many occasions.

The movie is more of an intellectual thriller/comedy/revenge type rather than the usual telugu mass films with heavy doss action & massy punch lines

The Dubbing was really good, as always Redakh Arts invested lot of money & effort to make it look like a Malayalam movie, which is a great relief. They have even changed the name boards, slogans, posters, wordss etc written in Telugu, seen in the movie here and there, to Malayalam digitally.

The Songs were good, but too many of them proved to be speed breaker. Choreography was good even though not terrific, expected some jaw droppig moves bay Allu. Editing was crisp. Visuals looked fresh kudos to cameraman, Trivikrams Direction was ok.

The lyrics of the songs were too bad, to attain lip sync they compromised on quality.
The Script even though pretty much entertaining for most of the time and moves in rocket speed, has plenty of holes, more than what you find in a fisherman's net. Many action sequences were not just illogical, but downright ridiculous. The movie loses steam towards climax and director looked desperate to finish the movie some how. There are plenty of 'How the hell did he ....? moments in the film. But the biggest disappoinment was Illeana, in her chakkar to enter & sustain in Bollywood she lose lot of weight and looked anorexic. Lost all her charm, even the famous hips failed to do any magic, her role was half baked and she did an average job too.

So all in all GP is a one time watch and a perfect entertainer for Allu Arjun fans.

Verdict: Above Average

Rating 2.75/5

Box Office: - Film is getting mixed response, so should be above average or Hit at max

Ek Tha Tiger - A Mallu's Movie Review from UAE [Exclusive]

Ek Tha Tiger - External Movie Review,  by Sree Prasad Nair

                                              Abu Dhabi National Cinemas, UAE

A Salman Khan film is always special. Be it his fight sequences, his witty one-liners, his dance moves, his punching dialogues & ofcourse his good looks, he is the darling of mases.  And Salman is at an all time high delivering 3 back to back 100cr blockbusters in a row (Dabangg, Ready & Bodyguard) his much awaited new film Ek Tha Tiger released today on August 15th 2012. No wonder Salman Khan fans celebrating today as Happy Salman Khan Day/Ek Tha Tiger Day. Being in this industry for 22+yrs, Salman Khan never worked under Yash Raj Productions. So of course the expectations will be high. With Salman’s ex-girlfriend turned good friend, Katrina Kaif as his heroine and directed by Kabir Khan (Kabul Express, NewYork) Sky is the target for this movie. The common question in the industry is will Salman be able to deliver  his 4th blockbuster in a row ? Will Ek Tha Tiger cross 3Idiots collection of 200cr+(only film so far) ? What’s the final verdict ? For me Ek Tha Tiger is neither class nor mass, neither good nor bad,  many positives and many negatives… Still I would say Ek Tha Tiger will be Salman’s 4th blockbuster(may even cross 200cr) in a row.

Ek Tha Tiger is a romantic thriller that revolves around the story of a Trinity College scientist, suspected of selling missile technology secrets to Pakistan. The Indian government sends a secret agent, Avinash Singh Rathore(code-named Tiger & mission-named Manish Chandra) played by Salman Khan to find out about the professor's activities. Tiger gradually falls in love with the professor's caretaker Zoya played by Katrina Kaif, who is studying at a fictional dance academy. The film engages you strongly with several twists and turns. What happens next? Will Tiger gain victory in his mission or will love take an upper hand? Katrina conceals her real identity behind her barbie doll face. What's that? Will that endanger Tiger's mission?

Let’s talk about the negatives of the film first : The masala factor that we always see in a Salman Khan film is highly missing and the actor who is always a charmer looks tired here. No punching dialogues & one-liners unlike Dabangg.  The screenplay of Ek Tha Tiger is nowhere near to Kabir Khan’s earlier films Kabul Express & New York. Music by Sohail Sen is average (except the hit number Masha Allah composed by Sajid-Wajid) and choreography of Vaibhavi Merchant is surprisingly boring. Some action scenes gone over the top especially in the climax.

Now the positives : If Sachin Tendulkar is God of Cricket & Michael Jackson is God of Dance, then Salman Khan is the God of Bollywood… Yes only Salman Khan can pull of this role TIGER! No wonder why story writer Aditya Chopra approached Salman Khan ahead of Shahrukh Khan for this role. His introduction scene & the stunts followed by then are electrifying. His expressions be it the funny ‘Doordarshan - Zee’ scene or in the emotional scene where he says ‘We should have the courage to follow our heart’ is superb. Katrina looks drop-dead-gorgeous. She acted really well and her action scenes are superb. She will be appreciated for her improvised Hindi accent too.  Ranvir Shorey and Girish Karnad are good in their roles. Special credit should go to Aseem Mishra, for his never seen beautiful cinematography. Hit number Masha Allah is already a rage and is another superhit music from Sajid-Wajid. Direction by Kabir Khan is good so are the stunts.

On the whole Ek Tha Tiger is an above average Salman Khan starrer which is surely turning out to be his 4th 100cr blockbuster for Salman Khan and the first ever for Yash Raj Banners! Yes Yash Raj films finally need Salman Khan to enter into the 100cr league…, Excuse SRK fans…!!!

At the B.O the film already opened extraordinarly & 30cr according to early estimates trends. It will get benefited from the extended week and is going to throw some extraordinary numbers…

Yes don’t get surprised if Ek Tha Tiger Collects 100cr in 4-5days & cross 200cr in 12 days (Chances are very pretty there)

VERDICT – Salman Khan films don’t need any reviews…

For me its 3/5 for this Rajnikanth Of Bollywood, Salman Khan starrer, A Roaring Blockbuster…!!!
