Rockstar - Exclusive Movie Review

Rockstar Could have been better (Bollywood Movie Review)

A story can be turned into a totally commercial movie, a totally realistic movie or it can be a mix of both. The third part is really something that you have to approach very carefully as it is like walking a thin rope. Imtiaz Ali attempts to walk the thin rope with Rockstar as he mix commercial and realistic side together to tell the story of a naive punjabi boy's journey to become a Rockstar. Did Imtiaz Ali pull it off? read on...

Janardan (Ranbir Kapoor) is a simple and innocent middle class family boy who loves music and wants to become a famous singer one day. He is advised by his well wisher and mentor that in order to become a great singer he has to go through hard ship, pain and heart break. Janardan makes a few unsuccessful attempts to invite pain and suffering. At the end the when he stops trying, unknowingly the pain and sufferings comes to his life and before he realises, takes him to the very own fame and stardom that he once wanted. But the only difference is that now he hates it and wants to get away from it.

The first half of the movie is beutifuly done, where the the movie focus on the early days of Janardan or Jordan's life, his friendship with Heer (Nargis), their funny moments and the cheap thrills. Somewhere along the way you could feel the warmth of "Jab We Met" and a striking similarity to "Mere Brother Ki Dulhan". Overall the first half is packed with a full of life, fun ride.

Then comes the second half where Jordan meets up with Heer after a long gap and re-kindles his romance and then have to go through a separation and great suffering. Here's where you kind of get lost.  Somewhere along the way you feel confused and the scenes will feel repetitive and the story heading to nowhere.  The second half feels unnecessarily stretched to reach the climax and before you realise its climax, the movie ends leaving a feeling that something is left out. The last time i had the same feeling was when i saw the movie Kites.
To talk about the positives of the movie, Ranbir Kapoor is mind blowing, he effortlessly portrays the transition from an innocent boy to an intense Rockstar. Nargis has done a good job considering that its her first acting experience. Nargis Fakhry is packed with innocense and sex appeal alike. The chemistry between Nargis and Ranbir is scintillating. The Songs are soothing and very apt for the situations in the movie.

A tight script and slick editing could have made it a better movie, If the director could have kept the same pace and quality of the first half throughout the movie then it definitely would have turned out to be as good as "Jab We Met".

Our Verdict: The movie does not meet our expectation but it deserves a watch for Ranbir's efforts, his chemistry with Nargis  and A.R.Rahman's songs.
